* Safety and Security
Communication, awareness, and prevention are essential for personal safety.

At Rensselaer, we take a proactive approach to maintaining a safe and secure environment for the entire campus community. The RPI Department of Public Safety provides:

  • 24-hour campus patrols (by car, foot, and bicycle),
  • escort services for students walking alone at night,
  • emergency call boxes throughout campus, and
  • safety education.

All residence halls are accessible only with student electronic key cards.

The Department of Public Safety also provides 24-hour per day, 365-day response to life-safety incidents, coordinates internal and external resources to assist the management of critical incidents, and conducts awareness programs to proactively assist its community members in the maintenance of personal safety.

Rensselaer Emergency Notification System

Energency Notification System

We have made substantial enhancements to campus security and safety in recent months, and we continue to refine our protocols. Most notably, we are implementing a system to enable mass communication for the Rensselaer communities in Troy and Hartford, which we will call RPIAlert.

This system will be used to provide critical safety information to members of our communities in crisis situations. Information will be sent to cell phones, e-mail addresses, office phones, and other devices which enable direct communication to students, faculty, staff, and parents.

An audible alert system also is being installed to provide siren and verbal messages over a loudspeaker system on the Troy campus. In tandem, these systems will greatly enhance our current emergency communications capabilities, allowing us to communicate as quickly as possible when time is of the essence.
