The mission of the Office of Research is to realize the Rensselaer Plan’s goal of achieving prominence in the 21st century as a top-tier world-class technological research university with global reach and global impact, by providing strategic and operational support and infrastructure for the development of research programs and projects at Rensselaer.
Support services are offered for faculty seeking research opportunities, research proposal and budget preparation, and guidance on research management and intellectual property issues.
The Office coordinates major research themes and programs through interdisciplinary research centers. Links from this website offer overviews of these centers, summaries of major research projects and recent accomplishments, as well as information on research policies, guidelines, and infrastructure.
Responsible Conduct of Research: Research Regulation and Compliance at Rensselaer
The Office of Research is committed to the highest standards of research integrity in all work conducted at Rensselaer. The Office provides support, services and training to assure compliance with ethical and regulatory mandates governing research, including safe and humane care of animals used in research, biosafety, the protection of human subjects, the use of human and animal stem cells, and conflicts of interest.
Institutional Review Board (IRB): For research involving the use of human subjects.
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC): For research involving the use of vertebrate animals.
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC): For research involving the use of recombinant DNA and RNA; human cells; bacteria, viruses or viral vectors; select agents or other pathogenic organisms; and/or toxins.
Institutional Stem Cell Research Oversight (ISCRO): For research involving human and animal stem cells.
The appropriate campus regulatory committees must review and approve the research activities (and certain teaching activities) of Rensselaer faculty, staff, and students, whether they occur on or off campus. Approval is needed regardless of source of funding. Approval must usually be acquired prior to the disbursement of any federal research funding. Investigators are urged to allow ample time for their protocols to move through the approval process.
